The Ingredients:
Here is the list of ingredients you will need to make this air fryer apple crisp:
- Apples: The star ingredient! You can use any type of apple you prefer for this.
- Brown Sugar: Brown sugar makes the crisp topping extra buttery and indulgent.
- Almond Flour: This grain-free flour makes up the crisp topping.
- Tapioca Flour: This grain-free flour helps absorb the butter and makes the perfect balance for the crisp topping.
- Gluten-Free Quick Oats: Oats are a quintessential crisp topping ingredient. If you cannot tolerate grains, you can eliminate them. I find substituting with a chopped nut helps achieve the crunchy crisp topping you know and love.
- Dairy-Free Butter: Any dairy-free butter should work seamlessly for this apple crisp recipe.
- Xanthan Gum: This is an agent used in gluten-free baking to help your baked goods maintain their texture so they don’t become overly crumbly.
- Baking Powder: The rising agent that aids in helping the crisp achieve the desired texture.
- Salt: For flavor balance!
- Cinnamon: Every fall recipe needs a dash of cinnamon for warmth and flavor.
Step By Step Preparation Instructions:
- Step 1: Only 20 minutes stand between you and this super easy-to-make gluten-free (& dairy-free) apple crisp! First, cut your apples in half. Then, using a spoon, remove the seeds and center core. You want to keep most of the apple intact in order to not lose any flavor, so make sure you scoop out just the core. Place the apples in the air fryer, cut side up and bake at 325 for 10 minutes. You will bake the apples again, so for now, you should be able to just pierce the apples with a fork, but they shouldn’t be super soft. If using large apples, you may need to add a minute or 2.
- Step 2: While the apples are baking in the air fryer, whip up the crisp topping. Add all ingredients to a bowl, then mix and work the butter into the ingredients until it comes together in large chunks, but is not a cohesive dough. Once the apples have finished cooking, carefully and generously spoon on the crisp topping to each apple, gently packing it into the semi-hollowed center. Gently packing the crisp topping helps it stay in place during the cooking process. The air fryer cooks by using a fan that circulates the hot air, so the fan can blow around some of the crumble topping if not gently packed. Bake the apples with the topping at 325 for 9-10 minutes. The topping should be crispy and golden, and the apples nice and soft.
- Step 3: Serve up with some dairy-free ice cream and my dairy free caramel sauce and you have the easiest, comforting dessert.
